Jack was the name of the Logan's mule.
Mr. Morrison was very quiet as Jack the mule clopped noisily along the dry road.

Jack is either the Logans' or Mr. Morrison's mule.
In chapter 4, during the fight, a mule wagon stopped and Mr. Morrison stepped out.
