Effect of a child narrator

Does having a child narrator in the story make the racial events more or less sinister?

The innocence of a child brings a sincerity to the narration that an adult could not bring. Cassie has a fiery personality which keeps her narration interesting. So, it is not only the fact that she is a child but that she has an interesting personality that keeps the story moving. Also Cassie's naïveté about racism gives us a perspective about how ugly it is, especially when inflicted on a child.
