One way in which Defoe alludes to colonialism in the text is through Crusoe's appropriation of the island. He takes the island and makes it his own.... his home, and his domain. Over the course of the story, Crusoe wishes for a companion, a role that Friday fills, but Friday, like the island..... is appropriated, made a servant. Friday is renamed, converted to Christianity, and taught the European way. Crusoe nedver considers that Friday might have something to teach him.... he just assumes he is superior.
