"The grey sea and the long black land"-what makes the sea grey?

the poem is a love poem.the poet is travelling in the sea in the early night with the presence of yellow half moon.

The sea is grey because the poem takes place sometime during the night. We know that the landscape is illuminated by nothing more than a half-moon, but that is all we know about the time of day.
