What was Halliday?

In Halliday's last scene in the movie, in the bedroom of the house where he grew up, he gives the egg to Parcival. Parcival is an avatar in the scene, implying he is in the Oasis.
Parcival is holding the egg and says to Halliday - you're not an avatar are you? Halladay replies "No".
Parcival ask him if Halliday is really dead? Halliday replies "Yes".
Parcival asks a third question, "What are you then"? Halliday does not answer the question. He smiles and says "Goodbye Parcival, Thanks, Thanks for playing my game".
What is implied by Halliday's response or lack thereof, to the final question?

Halliday, once a prominent game designer is the now-deceased creator of the OASIS, a massive online simulation used by billions of people worldwide. It is through his frequently-mentioned book in the story, Anorak's Almanac, that most of the details about his character become known to the reader. Before his death, Halliday created an Easter egg inside the OASIS simulation and created a quest for the Easter egg that drew heavily on the video games and popular culture of his childhood. In real life he was socially awkward, known to walk out of interviews when he lost interest. After losing his love interest to his best friend and co-founder of the OASIS Ogden Morrow, Halliday went into seclusion in his residence, where he spent the last few years of his life coding the quest for his Easter egg.
