How was the summer on Mars?

The summer was warm, the water was cool, and they "walk down a path of clear running spring water." The next thing we know, five years have passed and ship lands..... and all that's found are empty cottages and Martians in the hills...... martians who are dark in colorm have yellow eyes, and speak perfect English.
