The novel is essentially about the relationship between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. Then we need to figure out just who is Pride and who is prejudice. THe narrator gives us indications throughout and so the reader, that's you, gets to ponder the term and fit it into not only the context of the book but life in general. It would seem that Darcy represents pride and Elizabeth represents prejudice. Then one wonders if perhaps it's the other way around. So, the title works as a sort of metaphor for the characters that you can't pin down. Originally Austin wanted to call this book "First Impressions". Sure this title works but Austin's publisher wanted to give the reader concrete labels to work with and try to fit together, he was right.
