Dupin meets the narrator while they are both searching for a rare book. Their meeting sparks a friendship, as the two men quickly find they have a lot in common. Dupin is a poor man, but he has a great analytical mind, capable of quick, accurate deductions. His observational skills are superb, and he has a great understanding of human nature.
