The book is a narrative of Marjane's life from six years of age until fourteen years of age. She not only changes from a young girl to an addolescent but also to a social activist. Marjane becomes quite aware of the socio cultural politics of her country. Marjane learns to reconcile her own beliefs and understanding of the world with the strict cultural rules of the Islamic regime.
