What happened during Rabbit's test flight?

The next day, Rabbit was on a free flight when the area was overtaken by American bombers. A Luftwaffe instructor named Sergeant Baum was also in the air and fired on the Americans who fired on him in return, killing Baum but diverting the fire power away from Rabbit.
