Why does Othello believes Iago's lies over Desdemona's pleas of innocence?

Iago has carefully manipulated Othello through his passive aggressive statements about Desdemona and by slowly sowing the seeds of doubt in Othello's mind. Iago knows just how to "water" and grow these seeds of doubt until they become full scale paranoia in Othello's mind.
