What is Iago motivation for hating Othello?

Iago claims that he hates Othello because Othello passed him over for a promotion to lieutenant, choosing Michael Cassio. I think Iago, at the end of the day, is really just a nasty person who likes to inflict chaos to men he feels have authority over him.
