The novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest became a bestseller, resonating] with public concern about involuntary medication, lobotomy and electroshock procedures used to control patients. Certainly the use of mind altering drugs was not uncommon among the younger general population during this era. Thus, various concoctions of drugs were used to treat many psychiatric conditions from simple anxiety to complex schizophrenia. Once admitted to a facility, patience had few if any rights. Moreover there was very little external regulation of these facilities rendering many abuses like we see in the novel.
