Explain in your own words why the Chief believes that the combine has not broken McMurphy?

Chief sees McMurphy's strength and refusal to conform to the ward's expectations as a sign he has not been broken. McMurphy ceaselessly attempts to bring the other patients out of the fog.... to make them face the reality of their situation rather than exist in a reality that doesn't exist. He is defiant.... challenging.... and unaccepting of the treatment of his fellow patients. He fights back regardless of the consequences.
