There are a few layers to this. McMurphy is not a follower of authority, especially the kind that Ratched wields recklessly. He also begins to care about the men on the ward. In many ways McMurphy becomes a Christ figure battling evil and fighting against the nurse, and the system, for the salvation of these men.
