Who was Smitty? How did he greet the black worker with the crooked back at Christmas?

Smitty was the skinner who got in the fight with Crooks. He is a fairly minor character in the book. Smitty apparently had got into a fight with the black "Stable Buck" at a Christmas party. This is one of the many stories that George and Lennie hear when they get to the ranch.
