Buchenwald is a camp Elie is at. Elie's father dies there.

Selection process- a "doctor" examine the prisoners. Healthy prisoners who can work and not cause trouble (academics like teachers, lawyers...were not desired) could live.

Hangings- Many of these take place in the camps throughout the book.

Idek the Kapos was overseer of Elie's bunk unit. He was cruel and beat Eli and father often. The Kapos were responsible for keeping their section in order and subservient.

SS- elite Nazi unit

Gestopo-(the German secret police force) took over the trains
