Elie is having trouble simply staying alive. Although Elie loves his father, he has trouble taking care of him at the camp. Elie's father is weak and refuses to stand up for himself. Elie cannot be strong for both of them. Being strong for himself is hard enough. They are starved and worked to exhaustion.
