Why does Wiesel as the author insert a parenthetical comment into the narrative saying, "(Is it any wonder that ever since then, sleep tends to elude me?)"

This is Weisel's story. The parenthetical is meant to move us..... it's also meant to make us understand that the experiences of those who lived through these horrific days never leave them..... the memories stay with them forever.
