Both these characters represent a sense of otherness. They are Jewish yet they dare to go against a Judeo status quo that Wiesel says that the Jews value so much. Both speak out about impending doom when the others are just hoping for the best. Both are not silenced by the Nazis, but rather the Jewish people.
