Ehrenreich’s shares her personal experiences with the working poor to give the reader a sense of what many people in America have to endure. She brings a sensitivity or pathos that transcends mere income statistics and economic data. The reader can at the very least sympathize with a single mother forced to work three jobs just to keep food on the table for her children.
