What is ironic about the building Bigger selects for Bessie to wait in for the ransom money? What evidence is there that Mr. Dalton is a racist even though he claims to have a great interest in helping black people?

1) The building is cold and empty.... abandoned.

2) In Book III, Mr. Dalton is called to the witness stand, where he exposes the exorbitant rents and segregating practices and policies of the Dalton's South Side Realty Company. Dalton admits that he simply assumed that blacks were happier living in their own neighborhoods and after he prides himself on helping his employees get an education, he admits that he has never offered employment to any educated blacks.
