After being questioned by Britten, Bigger has a dream. A church bell is ringing in the distance as he runs in panic holding a package. Everything is drenched in the red furnace light of the murder. Bigger stops to open the package and finds a bloody severed head inside. People question Bigger about the head until he throws it at them in frustration. This dream foreshadows Bigger's mounting guilt and the accusations from white people that are about to become intense. Bigger feels like his actions are about to catch up with him.
