Identify the irony in chapter 1

This is rather ironic for a mother to say about her son. Mandisa tells us that she is not surprised about the murder: "I have known for a long time that he might kill someone some day" (5). She has seen that her son is capable of murder, but is surprised that it wasn't one of his friends or one of his siblings that he eventually hurt.
