Over the course of the novel, we see Steve in a variety of way. He's the good kid, who is tempted into trouble..... who is capable of monstrous acts. After which, we see the regret, guilt, and panic of the "good kid" turn into a belief that he is truly a monster. In the end, Steve thankfully sees his time in prison as something he does not want to repeat.... he cannot make himself a hardened criminal..... he doesn't want to be there. So..... there is hope.
