In many instances, homosexuality is ignored. Williams' homosexual activity is either completely unnoticed or brushed aside. Mrs. Mooreland, who has known Williams for twenty years, even seems to be oblivious, leading us to infer that the people of Savannah are more concerned with wealth and status than their friends and neighbors.

In Chapter Sixteen, however, the discovery of Williams' homosexual relationship with Danny exposes the prejudices towards things that are unconventional or unfamiliar and shows how unaccepted alternative lifestyles are in Savannah society.
