Duncan seems like a generous King. He is overjoyed to hear the Sergeant speak of Macbeth's and Banquo's conquests, "O valiant cousin! worthy gentleman!" Malcolm is eager to give Macbeth and Banquo and even the Sergeant for defending him in battle,

"This is the sergeant

Who like a good and hardy soldier fought

'Gainst my captivity."
