Explain the importance of "what hands are here?.....making the green one red," in terms of macbeths character?

Macbeth still has a conscience at this point. He feels the pangs of guilt and wrongdoing for killing King Duncan. His regret is so intense that he uses this metaphor and hyperbole to describe his guilt.
