What effect do the sound effects at the. End of scene 2 have ?

The sound effects (knocking) heighten the suspense in the scene, which is almost immediately offset by the porter who answers the door.... and slips in a few jokes. Note, the audience..... even with the humor, never gets the murder out of their heads.
