What is the beast, and what happens to it?

The beast, the dead pilot, floats out to sea. Their perceived beast turns out to be young Simon, Christ-figure and the opposite of the beast, who they savagely killed on the beach. 

The "beast" is a dead parachutist that they have misidentified.  Their behavior toward Simon is also beastlike.
