How do the boys stick to societal norms?

The boys try to stick with social norms but these norms deteriorate as the story moves forward. They have meetings and try to form a semblance of a democracy. They attempt share responsibilities like keeping signal fire going, having fresh water on hand, and honoring the conch as a sign that everybody has a right to be heard.
