Simon is the only boy who understands the nature of the Beast; he knows the beast lives within all the boys. So, it is fitting when Simon scrambles down the mountain to tell the boys the "good news" (The beast that they see is just a dead pilot), Simon is brutally killed. Simon climbs out of the forest at the wrong time. Jack has whipped his boys into frenzy to distract them from the storm. The boys, already charged with adrenalin, mistaken Simon for the beast and kill him. This of course is ironic as Simon is trying to save the boys from their perceived beast. It is suggested that it was not only Jack's tribe that got caught up in the hysteria that lead to Simon's death.
