Why does Mama Elena feel that she doesn't need a man?

Mama Elena is a very independent woman. She's taken care of her ranch and her daughters with great success..... thus, in her opinion, why would she need a man when she's been successful on her own. Note, her sense of independence was a rare thing during this time period.
