Life of Pi

Pi's full name,Piscine Molitor Patel, was inspired by a Parisian swimming pool that "the gods would have delighted to swim in". The shortened form refers to the ratio of circles circumference divided by its diameter . What is the significance of Pi's unusal name?

We are told that Pi or Piscene was named after a family friend who frequented the swimming pool Piscine Molitor in Paris. Pi doesn't get the friend's name rather than the pool's name. The name is shortened to avoid harassment from other kids (they used the word "pissing"). I can only speculate on the mathematical relationship that his name has. Pi represents an irrational number that goes on forever. We might examine if there are similarities to this in Pi's personality.
