Alan is carrying with him the rent money that the poor peasants have to pay to continue to be renting the land. Half of it is paid to King George; the other half is paid to the clan chief of his Scottish clan. Because he wants to make sure that the rent is paid and that the peasants do not suffer any more than they already have, he is willing to take the risk to get them their rent money. David considers his gesture very noble.
