Kate Chopin's Short Stories

why you believe the title is ironic?

Is this story just about "an hour?" What could it suggest about the life of Mrs. Mallard, her life with her husband, and the life of women, in general, during Kate Chopin's time? This could hint to the irony in the title.

The story suggests that marriage does not equate to happiness. Mrs. Mallard's marriage was actually unhappy and restricting. Men had all the power in the relationship and divorce was seldom an option for women. Brently Mallard's passing meant freedom for Mrs. Millard.
