Kate Chopin's Short Stories

Quote

How does the falling quote show the psychologica; strain of marriage caused mental illness (or the lack of metal illness caused by the death of her husband)?

“When she abandoned herself a little whispered word escaped her slightly parted lips. She said it over and over under the breath: “free, free, free!” The vacant stare and the look of terror that had followed it went from her eyes. They stayed keen and bright. Her pulses beat fast, and the coursing blood warmed and relaxed every inch of her body” (Chopin).

Mrs. Mallard is so unburdened and happy about her husband's death that her heart begins to quicken. This gives her a heart attack but she dies happily. This does not speak well of her marriage.
