what happen in chapter 36?

They walk along the bed of bones. THey came to the edge of the vast mushroom forests we had discovered near Port Gretchen. Axel thinks he sees giant animals in the distance,

"Yes, I could see these enormous elephants, whose trunks were tearing down large boughs, and working in and out the trees like a legion of serpents. I could hear the sounds of the mighty tusks uprooting huge trees!"

They think they also see a giant human. THey run away and contemplate if they really saw what they thought they did.
