What does Johnny find in the Bible in Chapter 8?

In Chapter Eight, Johnny finds the family Bible, which contains the family tree. The family tree shows a female member of the family, Lavinia (Johnny's mother), who had married a doctor. Both Lavinia and her husband's name have been scratched off.
