Hancock is very wealthy and his patronage could help the Laphams financially. Since the sugar basin is supposed to replace one that was melted, Mr. Hancock wants it to match the silverware he already has.

Mr.Lapham was the original maker of the sugar basin, so Mr. Hancock went to him first.
