Karana is lonely and frightened living on the island alone, but she rises to the challenge and does everything she can to insure her survival and keep herself safe. She also fears the return of the Aleuts, keeping a canoe handy to escape if necessary. Because Karana has no family or friends to keep her company, she finds new family..... the birds and animals around her.
