If the main character didn't need a job or money, why does he freeload off of everyone he meets?

The main character is living "in the wild," both literally and figuratively. He wants to experience life on the road and becomes a comrade to everyone he meets. He provides for himself occasionally if he must, but for the most part he is simply being a free spirit.
