In Chapter 8, Saul’s grandmother wants Benjamin to receive traditional Ojibway funeral rites. In response, Saul’s mother calls her own mother a heathen and tells her that she wants to take Benjamin’s body to a Christian priest for Christian funeral rites. To prevent her daughter from taking Benjamin to a Christian priest, Saul’s grandmother sends Benjamin’s body down a river in a canoe.
