At this point, hockey has become Saul's refuge. Saul progressed so rapidly in the game that the other boys could no longer keep up with him. Only Father L. could challenge Saul on the ice and even this becomes insufficient. I think the author is setting us up for the change that is about to happen. Saul is going to be able to leave the school and join a native hockey team. This will be one of the major turning points in Saul's life.
