In Toronto (Ch. 33-39) Important events

In Chapter 33, after the tournament, Saul is somewhat inured to the violence dealt by the other teams on the ice. Many newspapers report the outcome of the tournament, further publicizing the reputation of the Moose. One day, a scout from a professional hockey team arrives at Manitouwadge.

In Chapter 34, the scout, Jack Lanahan, speaks with Saul. Lanahan asks Saul to come play for the Toronto Marlboros, a team from which the Toronto Maple Leafs recruits players.

In Chapter 35, the scout persists for three weeks. Saul accepts the offer due to encouragement and imploring from his teammates, who want to see him succeed.

In Chapter 36, Saul finishes the season with the Moose and does extra training to prepare for joining the Marlboros. Saul and Virgil say heartfelt goodbyes to one another before Saul leaves for Toronto.

In Chapter 37, Saul finds the urban, multifaceted environment of Toronto to be strange and alien to him. He lodges with a former hockey player who is a friend of Fred Kelly’s. On the first day of training/tryouts with the Marlboros, Saul skates with his usual impressive skill.

In Chapter 38, Saul is drafted onto the Marlboros. All the other players in the league are hostile towards him, but Saul still distinguishes him as a star player. Eventually, the relentless persecution and taunting wears down Saul’s impassive resolve, and Saul begins to brawl with other players whenever provoked.

In Chapter 39, Saul thinks about two sisters who were students at St. Jerome’s. The nuns and priests tortured the sisters with means such as prolonged solitary confinement. After one of the sisters died under mysterious circumstances, the other sister killed herself.
