In chapter 11 what might the bathing process be a metaptfor?

Children were bathed in scalding hot water, scrubbed with stiff-brittle brushes and harsh soap, It felt like they were trying to remove our skin. I think, in a sense, the nuns were trying to "whitewash" these children.
