Mrs. Clutter's condition requires everyone else in the family to pitch in and even care for her. Her children and husband divide the chores between them. Nancy has taken over preparing the family meals out of necessity; her father helps out with dinners because he loves to cook. Bonnie Clutter is very upset that she's missing watching her childen as they grow up.

In many ways Mrs. Clutter has effectively cut herself off from her family. She is unable to function in the "role" of a helpmate to her husband who is a strong leader; she stays in bed mostly because she then has to do nothing. Her depression keeps her away from her children, and in many ways they all live their own lives.
