While growing up, Hurston saw little difference between herself and the white people who traveled through her colored town. Her family was financially stable, she did well in school, and she was happy. Moving to Jacksonville changed things for Zora..... she became aware of her color, she was reminded of things she felt best left behind..... things that she herself never thought about.
