Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: Poems

“The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls”

In the last stanza, what continues to occur, despite the traveler’s absence?

The morning breaks; the steeds in their stalls Stamp and neigh, as the hostler calls; The day returns, but nevermore Returns the traveller to the shore, And the tide rises, the tide falls.

The tide continues to happen: the day returns, followed by night. The cycle of life and death.
