Why does Marlow refer to them as the "faithless pilgrims"?

The so called “faithless pilgrims” are the agents in the Center station. He has nicknamed them this way because they are always wandering all around the station doing nothing at all. The name carries a lot of irony. They are foreign nationals that exploit the people and land of the Congo.
